We’ve been discussing in the last few weeks that Reddit Gold, which will replace Awards and Coins (RIP) could be a cryptocurrency, and that RCPs could be in danger.
Well, based on a brief read on the API’s recent alterations, Reddit Gold probably won’t be a cryptocurrency:
“Gilded” is also now added to the attributes you can fetch about an user:
As per the dictionary:
gild (verb): to cover a surface with a thin layer of gold or a substance that looks like gold
literary: to cover the surface of something with bright, gold-coloured light: Sunlight gilded the children’s faces.
Now the “give” function is self-explanatory. The gilded one is likely related to asking/receiving Reddit Gold. On the “preferences” calls, there’s the following function:
show_gold_expiration
In addition, getting a user stats will return their “Gold Status”, meaning that there will be ranks:
In addition, there are no mentions of Avatars nor RCPs.
These might indicate that Reddit Gold won’t be a cryptocurrency, as it is my understanding. In other words, RCPs will likely keep playing a role in their ecosystem.
